Mark Bowden, author of Guests of the Ayatollah : The First Battle in America's War with Militant Islam. Bowden will talk about the interviews he conducted with hostages and hostage-takers in the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979. The Duke Library holds the interviews Mark Bowden conducted as well as Tim Wells' interviews with 36 of the 1979 hostages; these interviews are the basis for his book, 444 Days: The Hostages Remember. Negar Mottahedeh, associate professor in the Literature Program, will speak about social networks and new media in the reporting of current events in Iran. Moderated by Bruce Kuniholm, dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy and a member of both the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Policy Planning Staff during the Carter administration.

- Description: Within the Red Light District of Calcutta this documentary explores the hopeless lives of the sons and daughters of prostitutes through photography and film. The director (Zana Briski) is determined to use the photography to provide the children with the opportunity for higher education, hope and a better life. Of the children, only one of which, Avijit, is able to separate himself from the rest through actual talent with the rest being young and imaginative kids, the same that one would find anywhere else in the world. By the end of the film most of the children are enrolled and attending classes, however not all take the opportunity and choose to return to the brothels.
