DESCRIPTION:A new exhibit in Perkins Library explores the beauty and impor
tance of herbaria in furthering our understanding of the natural world an
d highlights our own ¿hidden library¿ of plants right here on campus¿the
Duke Herbarium. The Duke Herbarium\, located in the Biological Sciences B
uilding next to the French Family Science Center\, is one of the largest
herbaria in the United States and the second largest at a private U.S. un
iversity (after Harvard). With more than 800\,000 specimens of vascular p
 lants\, bryophytes\, algae\, lichens\, and fungi\, the Duke Herbarium is
a unique and irreplaceable resource used by local\, national\, and intern
ational scientific communities. Botanical Treasures of Duke's Hidden Libr
ary examines the work of the Duke Herbarium\, explains how plant specimen
s are collected\, and highlights some surprising stories from the field\,
like how Duke biologists recently named a newly discovered genus of fern
 s after Lady Gaga!

the final product of this collaboration\; the students' powerful express

DESCRIPTION:Our lab is interested in infant/child development and behavior
\, maternal behavior including maternal-in¬fant interactions\, and aggres
sive behavior in both preclin¬ical and clinical models. The lab primarily
focuses on translational research on the effects of drugs of abuse on th
e dynamics of maternal-infant interactions in both human and rodent model
 s. Our methods incorporate genetics\, molecular biology\, endocrinology\,
imaging and many types of behavior as we study both normal and abnormal
aspects of development following drug use or exposure. Subject areas of i
nterest include among others\, infant neglect\, teratology\, Neuroendocri
nology\, Behavioral Pharmacology and Developmental Disabilities Research.
The role of oxytocin in aggression\, maternal response and intergenerati
onal effects of drugs is of par-ticular interest to our lab. We collabora
te with numerous research scientists and clinicians to develop and incorp
o¬rate the best expertise available for our studies. The work has been pr
imarily funded through NIDA with contribu¬tions from NIMH and other small
er agencies. Our lab trains premedical\, graduate and undergraduate stude
nts from various departments and curricula who go on to be primarily rese
arch scientists\, academic professors and physicians.

DESCRIPTION:Recent advancements in wireless sensor technologies and autono
mous vehicles are transforming many areas of science and engineering\, sp
anning from ecology and geosciences to robotics and artificial intelligen
ce. Although sensor technologies vary greatly\, from embedded sensor syst
ems on unmanned vehicles to tiny ¿smart dust¿ sensors\, a unifying paradi
gm that has recently emerged in the literature is to treat sensor network
 s as a system of dynamic information-gathering agents. As a result\, envi
ronmental modeling and prediction tools that utilize sensors to obtain in
-situ measurements over time can also be used to help manage and control
the sensors to improve the quality of the sensor measurements. The WISeNe
t Workshop brings together scientists and engineers in the fields of sens
or networks\, environmental modeling and prediction\, and computational i
ntelligence\, to ultimately improve our understanding of environmental an
d ecological processes\, in particular climate change and pollution\, and
to achieve a more effective use of unmanned vehicles and remote sensing.
