DESCRIPTION:The rapid development of land surface models (LSMs) over the p
ast three decades has reached a point that these LSMs can adequately repr
esent the surface energy\, water\, and carbon balances spanning a wide ra
nge of space and time scales\, as judged by comparison with a wealth of s
urface and remote sensing datasets. LSMs have been used in various weathe
r\, climate\, and earth system studies. Recently\, LSMs are being asked t
o do more or to merge with other types of models. \n\nDr. Yang directs t
he Center for Integrated Earth System Science (CIESS) at University of Te
xas at Austin. The center fosters a collaborative study of Earth with a f
ocus on land\, atmosphere\, water\, environment\, and society and integra
tes the university¿s strengths in earth system modeling\, observing and m
 onitoring\, computational science and engineering\, supercomputing\, air
resources engineering\, hydrology and water resources\, sedimentology and
  depositional processes\, energy/policy\, outreach/communications\, and o
ther fields. Dr. Yang also leads the Land\, Environment\, and Atmospheric
Dynamics (LEAD) group in the Department of Geological Sciences. The grou
p quantitatively addresses how land surface processes affect and are affe
cted by climate variability and climate change\, with a focus on environm
ental issues of societal importance\, such as the conditions of freshwate
r resources\, ecosystems\, and air quality. \n\nPlease see More Informati
on for a detailed abstract and speaker bio. Refreshments provided.

DESCRIPTION:Students\, faculty and staff are invited to attend the forth p
resentation of the Spring 2012 Nicholas Institute for Environmental Polic
y Solutions and UPEP Environmental Institutions Seminar Series. Our speake
r will be Elizabeth Wilson\, Associate Professor in the Humphrey School o
f Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. \n\nHer talk is titled "
Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Lessons from the States."\n\nUnderstan
ding how state-level factors are affecting low-carbon technology adoption
and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction policy preference across the United S
tates is a crucial component to securing long-term emission reductions.Th
is talk will focus on two studies. The first project analyzes Climate Act
ion Plans (CAPs) developed in eleven states and surveys the CAP advisory
group members. The second project presents qualitative findings from our s
tate-level case studies on how wind power is portrayed by energy stakehol
 ders.

DESCRIPTION:Through its ecomagination initiative\, GE has established itse
lf as an industry leader in sustainability. Going beyond traditional co
mpliance or risk management approaches\, GE¿s strategy highlights the rol
e of sustainable innovation in reducing costs\, generating profits\, and
enhancing competitive advantage in the marketplace.\n\nJeff Fulgham\, for
merly GE Power and Water¿s Chief Sustainability Officer and now Chief Sal
es Officer at Banyan Water\, has been at the center of the corporate sust
ainability revolution. Working with many Fortune 500 companies over the
last 30 years\, Jeff has helped create long-term sustainable advantage th
rough proactive approaches to water\, air quality\, land use\, waste mana
gement and other environmental issues.\n\nIn this talk\, Jeff will share
his experiences and insights related to how companies embrace or reject s
ustainability\, are proactive or reactive in their approach\, and how sus
tainability is increasingly critical to their business success. Drawing
on his deep expertise in water management\, Jeff will also describe the c
utting edge tools and frameworks that companies are using to effectively
 address their sustainability challenges.

DESCRIPTION:In extremely flat sedimentary landscapes like the Pampas\, sha
llow groundwater is tightly connected not only to surface water bodies an
d wetlands\, but with most terrestrial ecosystems\, including croplands.
Questions re: climate fluctuations and patterns of ecosystems and ground
water exchange are explored based on field and remote sensing observation
s and modeling. Developing theoretical frameworks and land use management
approaches are presented. \n\nDr. Jobbágy is an Agronomist (UBA-Argentin
a\, 1993) and Doctor in Biology (Duke University\, 2002). Jobbágy has pub
lished more than 70 scientific articles in the fields of Ecology\, Biogeo
chemistry\, Agronomy and Hydrology. While focused on the role of the biot
a\, particularly plants\, shaping water and nutrient cycles\, his recent
work is paying more attention to the way in which humans\, through their
decisions and social pressures\, affect ecosystem functioning. He receive
d the Houssay award in 2009 from the president of Argentina and is curren
tly visiting the US as a Guggenheim fellow. In 2003\, Jobbágy established
the Grupo de Estudios Ambientales\, a team that today hosts 15 researche
rs and students and is located in San Luis\, in the center of Argentina.
This research team sustains active collaborations with other labs in Hung
 ary\, Spain\, China\, Uruguay and the US\, including Duke University.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The use of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the United Stat
es will allow coal-fired power generation to remain a major component of
the nation¿s energy mix while also reducing its carbon emissions. The cos
t of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) will affect the deployment of CCS\, a
s will the costs for CO2 pipeline transport and underground injection. Th
e latter can increase CCS costs by $2¿$100 per ton of CO2\, depending on
the locations of coal plants relative to storage sites\, the quantity of
captured CO2\, and the rate that it can be pumped underground. Transporta
tion and storage costs can be minimized\, however\,by optimizing the desi
gn of the transport system.\n\nDuke University has developed software for
this purpose. OptimaCCS maps out cost-efficient options for overall CCS
network design\, including pipeline routes\, necessary pipe diameters and
lengths\, efficiencies from using shared pipelines\, and the impact of s
equestration costs. The software has been deployed to design the most opt
imal CCS network in Texas\, North Carolina\, and national level.
