DESCRIPTION:Eleven Duke physician residents representing nine different de
partments enrolled in the Documenting Medicine program this year will pre
sent their final projects to the public. The projects\, which encompass a
wide range of patient and provider stories\, reveal an intimate and rare
glimpse into the challenges and opportunities of providing health care i
n today's increasingly complex medical system.\n\nFrom Chief Surgery Resi
dent Lisa Tracy's multimedia portraits of families affected by gun violen
ce in Durham to Psychiatry Resident Jose Ribas' photographic survey of th
erapeutic spaces\, the projects use documentary as a mode of inquiry to h
ighlight the human dimension in healthcare today.\n\nIn 2010\, Dr. John M
oses and Liisa Ogburn\, with support from the Graduate Medical Education
Innovation Fund\, the Center for Documentary Studies and Duke Hospital Pr
esident Kevin Sowers\, joined forces to offer Duke physician residents th
e opportunity to produce documentary projects which examine a health stor
 y. Applications are currently being accepted for 2012-2013.

DESCRIPTION:Gennifer Weisenfeld will give a presentation on her new book\,
"Imaging Disaster: Tokyo and the Visual Culture of Japan's Great Earthqu
ake of 1923\," followed by a reception and book signing. Focusing on one
landmark catastrophic event in the history of an emerging modern nation--
the Great Kanto Earthquake that devastated Tokyo and surrounding areas in
1923\, claiming more than 100\,000 lives--"Imaging Disaster" examines th
e remarkable array of visual responses to the event.\n\nRunning the gamut
from the voyeuristic macabre to the romantic sublime\, media spectacle t
o sacred space\, mournful commemoration to emancipator euphoria\, and nat
ional solidarity to racist vigilantism and sociopolitical critique\, the
vast visual archive created in response to the Kanto earthquake includes
 photographs\, paintings\, postcards\, cartoons\, urban planning schemes\,
maps\, architectural plans\, and even scientific visualizations. In "Ima
ging Disaster\," Weisenfeld shows how visual culture has powerfully media
ted the evolving historical understanding of this major national disaster
\, ultimately enfolding mourning and memory into modernization. \n\nGenni
fer Weisenfeld is an associate professor in Duke University's Department
of Art\, Art History & Visual Studies\, and author of "Mavo: Japanese Art

DESCRIPTION:A 6pm reception will be followed at 7pm with a talk by rising
star LaToya Ruby Frazier\, who will discuss her photographic work now on
view at CDS\, "Campaign for Braddock Hospital (Save Our Community Hospita
l). The series documents the struggle for economic opportunity and access
to health care by marginalized residents in her hometown\, Braddock\, PA
\, in the wake of the controversial 2010 demolition of the community's la
rgest employer\, Braddock Hospital. Frazier transformed photographs of ci
tizen protests as well as repurposed ads from a campaign by the Levi's co
mpany that drew on Braddock's industrial history into black-and-white pho
tolithographs and screenprints that reference early-twentieth century adv
ertising and social documentary. The exhibit also includes a video projec

the industrial community. The exhibit coincides with Duke University's y
