DESCRIPTION:The electrification of the drivetrain is crucial to solve our 
 energy problems and fill the gap to sustainable and zero emission mobilit
 y. We are now within reach of mass-marketed vehicles using Li-based batte
 ries. Full engineering analysis of batteries and battery systems must be 
 regularized\, and engineering development is needed to allow creation of 
 products and tools for integration of battery systems into vehicles. Elec
 tric Vehicles (EV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) face significant ba
 ttery-related challenges\, including limited driving range and high batte
 ry cost resulting from the capacity fade of batteries during usage. The p
 rediction of capacity fade and lifetime of batteries is important for cel
 l design\, determination of the optimal operation condition and control\,
  and cell maintenance\, and eventually the successful implementation of H
 EVs and EVs. Various mechanisms contribute to capacity fade\, especially 
 in large format cells which use multiple-material electrodes to enhance t
 he performance. An integrated approach considering different aspects of t
 he fading mechanisms is necessary. In this talk I will present some of ou
 r recent works on modeling the fading mechanisms in Li-ion batteries toge
 ther with experimental investigations.

DESCRIPTION:Six volunteers experienced severe inflammatory response during
  the Phase I clinical trial of a monoclonal antibody that was designed to
  stimulate a regulatory T cell response. Soon after the trial began\, eac
 h volunteer experienced a "cytokine storm"\, a dramatic increase in cytok
 ine concentrations. The monoclonal antibody\, TGN1412\, raised serum conc
 entrations of both pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines to very high\nval
 ues during the first day\, while lymphocyte and monocyte concentrations p
 lummeted. Because the subjects were healthy and had no prior indications 
 of immune deficiency\, this event provided an unusual opportunity to stud
 y the dynamic interactions of cytokines and other measured parameters. He
 re\, the response histories of nine cytokines have been modeled by a set 
 of linear ordinary differential equations. A\ngeneral search procedure id
 entifies parameters of the model\, whose response fits the data well duri
 ng the five-day measurement period. The eighteenth-order model reveals pl
 ausible cause-and-effect relationships\namong the cytokines\, showing how
  each cytokine induces or inhibits other cytokines. It suggests that pert
 urbations in IL2\, IL8\, and IL10 have the most significant inductive eff
 ect\, while IFN-¿ and IL12 have the greatest inhibiting effect on other c
 ytokine concentrations. Although TNF-¿ is a major pro-inflammatory factor
 \, IFN-¿ and three other cytokines have faster initial and median respons
 e to TGN1412 infusion.

DESCRIPTION:Recent advancements in wireless sensor technologies and autono
 mous vehicles are transforming many areas of science and engineering\, sp
 anning from ecology and geosciences to robotics and artificial intelligen
 ce. Although sensor technologies vary greatly\, from embedded sensor syst
 ems on unmanned vehicles to tiny ¿smart dust¿ sensors\, a unifying paradi
 gm that has recently emerged in the literature is to treat sensor network
 s as a system of dynamic information-gathering agents. As a result\, envi
 ronmental modeling and prediction tools that utilize sensors to obtain in
 -situ measurements over time can also be used to help manage and control 
 the sensors to improve the quality of the sensor measurements. The WISeNe
 t Workshop brings together scientists and engineers in the fields of sens
 or networks\, environmental modeling and prediction\, and computational i
 ntelligence\, to ultimately improve our understanding of environmental an
 d ecological processes\, in particular climate change and pollution\, and
  to achieve a more effective use of unmanned vehicles and remote sensing.
