DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: "The Journals of Musan" (Jung-bum Park\, 2010\
 , 127 min\, South Korea\, Korean with English subtitles\, color\, DVD) --
Director Park plays a North Korean defector trying to make an honest liv
ing in South Korea\, where he is continuously faced with the harsh diffic
ulties of fitting into capitalist society. This lonely introvert finds od
d jobs in the city that often lead to pain and trouble\, but he manages t
o hold on to some romantic curiosity-and to a fluffy dog who becomes his
one reliable source of companionship. This meticulous\, almost neorealist
portrait hovers between observation and judgment\, attachment and detach
ment\, stoicism and sentimentalism\, revealing a protagonist who is painf
ully flawed and fully human. -- Winner of Best New Director at 2010 Tribe
 ca Film Festival!

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: "Lion's Den" (Pablo Trapero\, 2008\, 113 min\,
Argentina/Brazil/South Korea\, in Spanish and French with English subtit
les\, color\, DVD) -- Writer/director Pablo Trapero crafts this tender ta
le of an incarcerated woman who gives birth to a baby boy and struggles t
o raise her son behind bars as she comes to the bleak realization that he
is the only one who matters to her anymore. It all started when a pregna
nt Julia woke up in her apartment flanked by the bloodied bodies of her f
ormer lovers Nahuel and Romiro. Subsequently sent to a prison for mothers
and pregnant convicts\, Julia railed against the system by withdrawing i
nto her own world. Upon giving birth\, Julia realizes just how difficult
it could be to raise a son in prison\, but each day her feelings for the
boy swell stronger within her. Later\, when Julia pays a visit to Romiro
in the men's prison\, it becomes obvious that the couple's feelings for o
ne another are just as muddled as the events of that fateful night back i
n Julia's apartment. --Won Special Jury Prize at Havana Film Festival\, 2
