Celebration of Duke and Indigenous Oaxacan Organization's Collaboration

Hear from Darien Herndon (Duke Class of 2021) on Tuesday, September 22nd at 7:00 PM EST about enviromental justice issues facing indigenous and Appalachia communities! Darien is a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and an affiliate of the Tuscarora Indian Nation. A 2020 Udall Scholar, she is president of Duke's Native American Student Association and a founding chapter member of Alpha Pi Omega sorority, the country's oldest Native American sorority.

Naeema Muhammad is Organizing Co-Director of the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network, an organization which promotes health and environmental equality for all people of North Carolina through community action for clean industry, safe work places, and fair access to all human and natural resources. She has worked tirelessly to hold the hog industry accountable for the pollution it produces that disproportionately impacts the lives of African Americans living in rural North Carolina counties.

Madeline Parker is the Youth Climate Justice Organizer for NC WARN, an organization that is pushing Duke Energy to move away from fossil fuels, working in partnership with social justice, environmental, consumer protection, housing, labor and faith allies.

Environmental Justice and Agriculture in India

Dr. Bruce Lindsay is a senior lawyer and ecosystems program lead at Environmental Justice Australia. Since 2012, Bruce has worked in a diverse range of practice areas within environmental and natural resources law. Bruce’s work has traversed law and policy reform and litigation. Bruce has worked closely with local community organisations and NGOs in order to use the law to protect the environment, as well as seeking to improve environmental laws. Since 2015 Bruce has advised Indigenous peak bodies and Traditional Owners in relation to water rights, especially in the Murray Darling Basin. This work includes seeking to progress innovative legal and policy approaches to achieving water justice for Indigenous communities.
