Scholars + Storytelling: #GeekGirls

The triumphant return of our Scholars + Storytelling series kicks off as we hear from Tracy Walker, one of Story Lab's very own graduate fellows! Tracy is a North Carolina-based writer, scholar, and geektivist who spends her time thinking about the spaces inhabited by women and minorities in fandom, media, and pop culture.

In this talk, Tracy Walker will discuss the history of the #geekgirls hashtag and broader social movement. The hashtag was first used on Twitter in 2009 and has since operated as a ping in networked fandom, a call to action for engagement, and a connector between digital communities and material spaces. Tracy's research began in 2016 and included a trip to Seattle for GeekGirlCon 2017, a convention born from the digital movement.
