CDS Shortwave Launch Party

An experimental graphic showing the "back" of the Shortwave radio, in which different cords are plugged into "film, writing, audio, new media, and photo."

This event celebrates the official launch and "transmission" of CDS Shortwave, a project of the Center for Documentary Studies' DocX lab. The experimental website showcases the documentary arts on an interactive, immersive digital platform inspired by analog modes of discovery.

The metaphor of a shortwave radio resonated for the Shortwave creative staff, with its connotations of transmitting and receiving, of participation and discovery across great distances. Its desktop version lets you discover fresh ways to engage with stories that incorporate audio, photography, film, writing, and new media; you can also use your smartphone as a tuner. The mobile version of CDS Shortwave allows a phone to act as a portable radio. Desktop or mobile, different content appears every time you visit Shortwave: three mix stations feature a variety of stories and two stations feature related content; there are also find community-sourced sounds, "ghost" stations, the occasional live-stream, and more. There will be a live on-site demo (and a new mode of play) at the launch party, as well as a reception.
