Anne-Maria Makhulu
Wednesday, October 28, 2020
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Anne-Maria Makhulu
Wednesdays at the Center

The eighth event in this series features Anne-Maria Makhulu, Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology and African and African American Studies at Duke University. She is the author of "Making Freedom" and co-editor of "Hard Work, Hard Times."

Her talk will draw a comparison between a number of social movement struggles in South Africa and the U.S. linked by their common historical experience of settler colonialism, indigenous genocide, chattel slavery, and in the current call to decolonize the university, the system of policing and incarceration, and society as a whole.

The John Hope Franklin Center (JHFC) and the Duke Center for International and Global Studies (DUCIGS) are launching the 2020/2021 Wednesdays at the Center series virtually.

The Wednesdays at the Center series, the John Hope Franklin Center, and the international area study centers in DUCIGS have worked in the past to address issues of racism, inequality, and marginalization both globally and locally.

This year, we will intensify our focus on anti-racism under the rubric: JHF | Global Anti-Racism (histories of action).
