No More Deaths: Migrant Aid in Arizona

Join the Social Movements Lab for two linked events on No More Deaths, a grassroots volunteer group that gives humanitarian aid to migrants crossing the US-Mexico border. Both events will have a free lunch provided.

1) On Wednesday, 2/21, 12pm-1pm, join us for a 'mapping' discussion based on readings of four essays about No More Deaths, direct aid, and the US border zone:
- "Introduction: No More Deaths" and "Crisis Time, Constant Border: On Direct Aid and the Tactics of the Temporary" by Sophie Smith
-"Abolitionist Care in the Militarized Borderlands" by China Medel
- "In Defense of Wilderness: Policing Public Borderlands" by Scott Warren

The discussion will be facilitated by the Lab's co-directors, Michael Hardt and Sandro Mezzadra.

2) On Monday, 2/26, 12pm-1pm, join us for a discussion about No More Deaths with Sophie Smith and China Medel (via Skype).

Sophie Smith is a desert aid facilitator and a search and rescue coordinator with No More Deaths. She is also a cofounder of the community organization People Helping People in the Border Zone.

China Medel is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill. She seasonally volunteers with No More Deaths. Her research works at the intersections of Latinx Studies and Media Studies.
