7:50 PM Panel Discussion

Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment presents a panel discussion around the documentary feature film Plastic Earth. Moderator Prasad Kasibhatla from the Nicholas School brings together Michelle B. Nowlin (Duke Law and Nicholas School of the Environment), Jason Somarelli (Duke Medicine and Nicholas School), Rachel Karasik (Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability) and Janice Overbeck (writer and director of Plastic Earth).

Plastic Earth (2023, directed by Janice Overbeck and Jack Winch) is a documentary feature film that covers solutions and technologies to combat and eventually solve the plastic crisis that our world is facing. Worldwide plastic production from fossil-based sources continues to rise; it contributes to climate change and pollution and threatens the planet's species. The film follows the story of concerned mother Janice Overbeck, who goes on a journey to learn the full story and to uncover what is happening to solve it. Through dozens of interviews with scientists, engineers, researchers and innovators, Janice gets first-hand insights on how we can get plastics under control. The film features many of the heroes working to solve the world's plastic and environmental issues. Co-sponsored by Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.

This event complements the Nasher exhibition "Spirit in the Land."

Plastic Earth is hosted by Rob Riggle (Step Brothers, The Daily Show). The film includes a segment that features interviews with Duke's own Tom Schultz, Dan Rittschof and Greg Merrill.
