Is There a Neurobiology of Psychoanalysis? Historical Perspectives & Contemporary Approaches
A Neurohumanities Research Group event. There has been a long and complex relationship between psychoanalysis and brain research, beginning with Sigmund Freud¿s own early work in clinical neurology and neuropathology and continuing to contemporary efforts to merge psychoanalytic and neuroscientific approaches to the study of mind and brain. This roundtable investigates that relationship by both examining the history of Freud¿s intricate and complicated transition from neurology to meta-psychology while also considering productive points of convergence between psychoanalytic and neuroscientific methodologies today. The roundtable will be an opportunity for discussants and audience members to seriously consider the role brain research plays for psychoanalysis from the standpoint of its past, present, and possible future(s).The roundtable will include a discussion of two pre-circulated papers.
