The small city of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy has seen the arrival of thousands of refugees
who make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea in hopes of finding better
living conditions.
In 2016 over 350,000 refugees crossed the Mediterranean Sea and reached European soil. Of
those,180,000 refugees took the Central Mediterranean route, which connects Libya to Italy
and Malta, and is the deadliest route in the world. Over 4,400 refugees died at sea last year.
Divided by the Sea is a collection of multimedia stories about the Mediterranean refugee crisis
and its impact on the small city of Reggio Calabria in Southern Italy through the eyes of both
refugees and local Italians.
