AMI Showcase

Film Screening: "Night Scene" (Cui Zi'en, 2004, 75 min, China, in Mandarin w/ English subtitles, Color, DVD, mature content). -- Introduced by Prof. Carlos Rojas, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. -- Q&A to follow with director Cui Zi'en (in Chinese, with English translation)! // Combining documentary and fictional elements, "Night Scene" explores the male prostitution scene in contemporary Beijing. While the work's main narrative revolves around a protagonist, Yangyang, who discovers that his father is gay and subsequently falls in love with a man who turns out to be a male prostitute, the film also offers a broader perspective on sex work and same-sex desire. "Night Scene" features a combination of actors and actual male sex workers. // About the filmmaker: Known as China's first openly gay director, Cui Zi'en has written, directed, or produced more than 20 films, and in 2002 he was awarded the Felipa Award by the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. Cui Zi'en is also professor of cinema studies and a novelist.
