Youth Leadership in Africa: Alumni Mentoring Dinner

Event Image
Thursday, February 23, 2017
6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
Raphael Obonyo MPP'13

How can youth in Africa take a leading role in transforming their countries and communities? And how can African governments and UN/World Bank international agencies leverage young people's energy and ingenuity to achieve sustainable development? What practical lessons can we learn from one alumnus' experience forging a real-world pathway for participatory development? Join Duke Africa Conversations Club, Duke Mastercard Foundation Scholars, the Public Policy Majors Union, and Sanford School's masters students in public policy (MIDP and MPP), for an evening of discussion with Raphael Obonyo MPP'13. Obonyo is a public policy and development expert with more than a decade of experience working to identify innovative solutions for problems facing youth. Growing up in one of Nairobi's largest slums, he went on to co-found and direct The Youth Congress and work with ministries in charge of youth affairs in Kenya and other countries in Africa. He is one of the United Nations Persons of the Year for 2016 and a member of the Advisory Board of the Global Diplomatic Forum. Obonyo will open with a brief analysis of two initiatives he has helped to drive and then field questions from participants. This event is made possible with the generous support of the Samuel and Ronnie Heyman Center for Ethics, Public Policy and the Professions.
