Artful Design with Ge Wang: A DESIGN MANIFESTO IN COMIC FORM
Ge Wang entered Duke in 1996 as a musician, fell in love with computer science while he was here, and has worked within the rich intersection of the two areas ever since. As a graduate student, Wang created a programming language for music and put it to work in the Princeton Laptop Orchestra, which he co-directed. After joining the faculty of Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics and creating a laptop orchestra there, Wang developed music apps for iPhone as a principal of the Silicon Valley start-up Smule.
His latest endeavor, Artful Design: Technology in Search of the Sublime, is "a manifesto of how we shape technology, and a meditation on how technology shapes us in turn." It is a meticulous exploration of the nature, meaning, and purpose of design in the smartphone age, as well as a playful artifact of design in comic-book form.
