Phased-array antennas which electronically steer a narrow reconfigurable beam have been at the heart of high-performance radar for more than half-a-century. Unfortunately, the cost of phased array radars has historically restricted their use to high-end military applications. Now, Echodyne is revolutionizing commercial and high-volume radar by utilizing metamaterials antenna technology to offer the performance advantages of intelligent beam-steering radar at breakthrough cost reduction. The beneficiaries of such a sensor span unmanned aircraft, self-driving cars, infrastructure security, and more. This talk blends technology & team, market opportunity, and corporate strategy to present a holistic view of Echodyne's vision and approach to usher in a revolution in radar. Tom Driscoll is Founder and CTO of Echodyne, the Seattle startup bringing breakthrough radar-vision sensors to autonomous vehicles and commercial markets. At Echodyne, Tom leads a world-class engineering team developing Echodyne's technology and product portfolio, helping them channel their talent and passion to meet the Echodyne's opportunity to redefine sensing for an autonomous future. Tom holds a PhD in physics from UCSD, and a B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd, and maintains an adjunct professor position at Duke University.
