Duke Jazz Ensemble with Alvin Atkinson, drummer/percussionist

The Duke Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Brown, welcomes guest artist Alvin Atkinson, drummer/percussionist. Alvin Atkinson balances a demanding career as a performer and an educator. He tours throughout the US and abroad with his group, The Sound Merchants, and with other artists like Tom Browne, Mo' Jamaica Funk (1996-2001), and Grammy nominated Nnenna Freelon's Soul Call tour (2001). He has performed and recorded with artists such as Freddy Redd, Benny Powell, Ellis Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Barry Harris, Curtis Fuller, Branford Marsalis, Ray Codrington, Charlie Byrd, Steve Turre, Wycliffe Gordon, and others. He has taught at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He currently teaches Jazz Language and Rhythm Studies at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Middle School Jazz Academy, as well as maintaining a private studio.
