18th Annual Duke Nicotine Research Conference

This year's theme is: "Increasing Smoking Cessation Success with Tailored Use of Diverse Treatments" A wide variety of new smoking cessation treatments are being discovered and developed, including pharmacologic agents affecting not only nicotinic and dopaminergic systems, but also serotonergic, noradrenergic, and histaminergic systems as well. These new approaches have the potential to target the varied population of cigarette smokers who continue to have great difficulty quitting for a variety of reasons. Individual differences in therapeutic response are vital to consider and what works for one smoker may not be effective for another. A rich toolbox of diverse treatments can be incorporated into tailored therapeutic strategies, including combination treatments, to yield higher success rates than the limited current individual treatments. The 2012 Duke Nicotine Research Conference will bring together researchers on the forefront of smoking cessation treatment discovery and development to present relevant data and discuss these new therapeutic approaches. In addition, adaptive therapeutic approaches will be presented that seek to guide individualized treatment based on early markers of therapeutic response. Attendees will leave with greater knowledge of candidate cessation treatments on the horizon as well as how to apply current treatments more effectively to increase success rates for smoking cessation.
