'Love Made Me an Inventor' -- A Conversation with Maggy Barankitse, Founder and President of Burundi's Maison Shalom

Duke Divinity School will present a conversation with Marguerite "Maggy" Barankitse, a Burundian humanitarian and the founder/president of Maison Shalom. The event is free and open to the public. Maison Shalom -- House of Peace -- is an organization dedicated to helping the children and orphans affected by the 12 years of civil war between the Tutsis and the Hutus in Burundi. Barankitse describes her work as ensuring that these children of war grow up in harmony and dignity, never feeling like victims. With this as her guiding principle, Barankitse established schools, clinics, agricultural cooperatives and a micro-finance system for rural women in Burundi. Her goal is to improve the lives of Burundian children so that all Burundians' lives are improved. To date, her work is estimated to have helped in the healing of more than 30,000 children and families in Burundi. The recipient of the Opus Prize -- a humanitarian award for faith-based entrepreneurship -- as well as many other honors and recognition, Barankitse will receive an honorary degree from Duke University at its commencement services May 12.
