Dr. Belmaker received his BA from Harvard College in 1967 and his MD from Duke Medical School in 1971. From 1972-74 he was a Clinical Associate at the National Institute of Mental Health. Since 1974 he has held positions in academic psychiatry in Israel, first at the Jerusalem Mental Health Center and then at Ben Gurion University of the Negev from 1985 to the present. Dr. Belmaker was a pioneer in biological psychiatry in Israel, and served as the President of the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP) from 2008-2010. His research interests include affective disorders, especially mania, ECT, and second messenger mechanisms.Dr. Belmaker has published over 400 articles and chapters and edited 18 books. He served a maximum term of 10 years as Chairman of his Department of Psychiatry and remains Associate Director of the Beersheva Mental Health Center. He sees patients in his public Bipolar Disorders Clinic and is actively involved in clinical trials as well as laboratory research.
