Half the Sky: Women & Resistance Around the World Exhibit

In their bestselling book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn claim that the "paramount moral challenge" of the 21st century is 'the struggle for gender equality in the developing world." This exhibit does not document "struggle" with the exploitative images often utilized for advocacy. Instead, it attempts to render the resilience of women and girls of color around the world, in the midst of the struggle against poverty, patriarchal cultural practices, sex trafficking and more, in the moments of strength, courage, joy and overcoming that they inhabit each day. In honor of Black History Month and the Christian liturgical season of Lent, which calls for reflection on the ways in which we are complicit in the suffering of others, this exhibit hopes to honor and remember the continuing legacy of mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and friends that are pertinent to the kinship network of all humanity.Reception will be held on March 2, 2012 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
