Race, Schizophrenia, and Immigration: Epistemological Considerations for Modern Psychiatry

Samir Patel hails from a small town called Bhuj in Western India. He studied Medicine at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, India, where he earned his MBBS in 2005. His love for travel and exploring different cultures brought him to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he earned his MPH in health education and behavior. He is currently a PGY4 at Duke Psychiatry Residency Program. He loves the interpersonal nature of Psychiatry and enjoys the ever-widening scope of the field as it borrows from a variety of fields including psychology, neurosciences, genetics, pharmacology, and humanities. Interested in psychotherapeutic approaches and their integration with more biologically-based methods of treatments, he envisions a career as a clinician-educator. He is slated to join a one-year geriatric psychiatry fellowship beginning July 2012 at University of Pennsylvania.
