Film Screening--"Secret Sunshine" (Lee Chang-dong, 2007, 142 min, South Korea, in Korean w/ English subtitles, Color, DVD) -- Jeon Do-yeon won best actress at Cannes for her devastating performance as Shin-ae, a young widowed mother, in this Korean tragedy that runs on grief. Without explanation, she moves with her son from Seoul to the small village where her late husband was raised--this proves a monumental mistake. "Shin-ae herself remains a mystery, as she resists the gang-press of gossipy neighbors and over-friendly men...Her unsettled life, and the mellow rhythms of the film, get scorched when her boy is kidnapped...'Secret Sunshine' doesn't just posit grief but probes the hidden biology of it, like a parasite slowly chewing up its host from the inside...One of the year's best films" (Michael Atkinson, Village Voice). -- Part of the Feminism & Freedom Film Series
