Photography exhibit: "Campaign for Braddock Hospital" by LaToya Ruby Frazier

Rising star LaToya Ruby Frazier documents the struggle for economic opportunity and access to health care by marginalized residents in her hometown, Braddock, PA, in the wake of the controversial 2010 demolition of the community's largest employer, Braddock Hospital. "Campaign for Braddock Hospital (Save Our Community Hospital)," which debuted at the 2012 Whitney Biennial, includes documentary photographs of citizen protests as well as repurposed ads from a campaign by the Levi's company that drew on Braddock's industrial history. Frazier transformed those images into black-and-white photolithographs and screenprints that reference early-twentieth century advertising and social documentary. The exhibit also includes a video projection by Frazier and her mother, "Detox," that concerns health issues in the industrial community. The exhibit coincides with Duke University's year-long series of events: Celebrating the Past, Charting the Future: Commemorating 50 Years of Black Students at Duke. The nine-month, campus-wide commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first black undergraduates will celebrate diversity and inclusiveness by illuminating Duke's black history. The university plans to host a range of events and compile a rich archive of feature articles, photos and other visual material to help tell the story of the black experience at Duke. Questions?
