CDS director Tom Rankin will give a talk and sign copies of a new book that he edited, published by UNC Press and CDS Books of the Center for Documentary Studies: "One Place: Paul Kwilecki and Four Decades of Photographs from Decatur County, Georgia." An exhibit of the same name is on view at CDS from March 18 to July 27, 2013. Paul Kwilecki was born in 1928 in Bainbridge, Georgia, and died there in 2009. In between, he raised a family, ran the family's hardware store, and taught himself how to use a camera. He documented life in his community for more than four decades, making hundreds of masterful and intimate black-and-white prints. "While Paul Kwilecki ranks among the most important American documentary photographers of the twentieth century, he is also one of the least well known," says Rankin.RECEPTION AT 6PM, TALK AT 7PM FOLLOWED BY BOOK SIGNING.Photographs in the exhibition are from Paul Kwilecki Photographs and Papers, David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Duke University.
