Union Yes: Why Workers' Rights Are Smart Public Policy

Event Image
Monday, March 04, 2013
5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Liz Shuler, secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO

Shuler is the highest-ranking woman leader in the AFL-CIO's history, and the youngest elected officer ever to sit on its Executive Council. As the college-educated child of a union family, a veteran of efforts to help clerical workers organize, and a labor-community coalition builder, she brings a fresh perspective to the nation's labor movement, now under attack in a way not seen since the 1920s--including proposals from North Carolina's new General Assembly for 3 anti-union constitutional amendments. Shuler's commitment to reaching out to young people and opening youth leadership opportunities has resulted in the AFL-CIO's exciting Young Workers Initiative. Come hear her case for why unions, as the most diverse major institutions in our society, are a vital part of the solution to America's surging inequality and a force for smart and inclusive public policy across the board.Sponsors: the Sanford School of Public Policy and the CLASS Center at Duke.
