Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy Seminar Series

College of New Jersey Professor Miriam Lowi will present a talk titled "To Heal the Earth: Environmental Sustainability between Modernity and Tradition in the Arabian Gulf" at Duke on April 4. This lecture will focus on two ¿modernity¿-driven initiatives in Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. that have either contributed significantly to environmental degradation, or been designed explicitly to mitigate degradation by reducing the carbon footprint. It will demonstrate that economistic orientations (and an obsession with appearing ¿modern¿) are inappropriate for addressing environmental challenges. Rather, suggesting that Gulf states would find important insights for effectively confronting climate change from within their own religious and cultural traditions. This talk is part of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy seminar series featuring leading experts discussing a variety of pressing environmentally focused topics.
