Brenda Armstrong
DukeJourneys

Dr. Brenda Armstrong is a professor, associate dean and director of admissions at the Duke University School of Medicine, but there is much more to her Duke journey than just an impressive resume. A member of one of the first classes at Duke to include African-American students, she was active in seeking racial equality on campus. Brenda was a founding member of the Afro-American Society and, as president of that group, took part in the historic Allen Building takeover of 1969. In her eight years as director of admissions, the School of Medicine has implemented a new paradigm for applicant evaluation and has recruited record numbers of women and underrepresented minorities. DukeJourneys is a dinner series to help undergraduates synthesize their education with global and civic involvement. Through conversations with Duke alumni and one another, students can begin to examine their choices, understand their experiences and visualize their futures, not just as part of their college curricula, but as templates for their adult lives. Please join Brenda Armstrong for dinner and thoughtful conversation about how her experience as a Duke undergraduate helped shape her career in medicine and her journey to contribute to equal opportunity for all. This event is open to undergraduates only, and space is limited. Registration required. A waitlist will be created if necessary.
