Tamiko Thiel · Visiting Artist
Media Arts + Sciences Rendezvous

Tamiko Thiel will speak on recent projects that engage the public and public space with overlays of virtual content: the bio-sensor driven augmented reality wild growth propagator "Biomer Skelters" in Basel and Dubai; the personalized lucky charm "Goldsegen/Golden Blessings: How much do you need to be happy?" in Munich; work done by her project partner Teresa Reuter with groups of all ages in Berlin, using their Berlin Wall virtual reality installation "Virtuelle Mauer" to reflect on changes in the city and society after the Fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago; and a work in progress "Brush the Sky," a collaboration with her mother, master calligrapher Midori Kono Thiel, to augment sites around Seattle with calligraphy that reflects on the meaning of the sites to the Japanese/Pacific Asian American experience in the region.Tamiko Thiel is a visual artist exploring the interplay of place, space, the body and cultural memory. She has done pioneering work in the development of the dramatic and poetic capabilities of virtual and augmented realities as media for exploring social and cultural issues, and considers ¿augmentation¿ to be the essence of art making: to reify the invisible webs of meaning to create what we call ¿culture.¿ Our featured speaker will give a short review of her project to give us a taste of what she's thinking about and engage everyone in a discussion. Anyone at Duke interested in Media Arts + Sciences is welcome. Drinks and light snacks provided.
