Conversions: Medieval and Modern

Thursday, November 13, 2014
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Conversions: Medieval and Modern working group aims to complement the upcoming Conversions lecture series co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Duke. In its most basic sense, the term conversion (Lat., conversio) signifies a reversal, a change of direction. Yet the change or turn-around that is conversion has meant many different things in different cultures and across a wide range of discourses from logic to lyric poetry, theology to politics. Our fall meetings will be devoted primarily to exploring major texts in the history of conversion and some contemporary critical and theoretical perspectives. Our spring meetings will be linked more specifically to guest lecturers¿ topics and texts, which we will explore in preparation for their visits. The working group welcomes the full range of disciplinary points of view. (As attending the working group will provide credit for the graduate certificate in medieval and renaissance studies, we will particularly encourage active participation by graduate students intent on integrating the broad, interdisciplinary conversations that are ongoing throughout Duke into their own research.) Please see the website for more information!
