Fresh Docs Screening of "Undocumented and Unafraid"

The Center for Documentary Studies and the Southern Documentary Fund will present a free screening of director Charlie Thompson's "Undocumented and Unafraid" as part of the Fresh Docs series, which features documentary works-in-progress. Following screenings, SDF director Rachel Raney moderates a conversation with the filmmaker in which the audience participates, providing valuable feedback.Fifteen participants in a Duke University course, "The US/Mexico Border," explore the meaning of borders, immigration, and access to education in America. Four of them are non-students and non-citizens. They act, for a semester, as if barriers to their education no longer exist. Undocumented and Unafraid, directed by Center for Documentary Studies faculty member Charlie Thompson, follows the lives of the four "guest" students, along with the eleven "regular" students who go through the semester with them, exploring their diverse pasts and gaining insights into citizenship, entitlement, and identity in America. In the end, the students have broken down personal barriers and stereotypes... but one major barrier remains.
