"A Primer on Abelian Varieties"In representation theory, you learn about compact Lie groups. In algebraic geometry, you learn about complex algebraic varieties. In this talk, we will see how these two notions come together in the world of Abelian varieties. These are important objects in algebraic geometry, which carry some pretty remarkable and unexpected properties. We will try to cover as many of these as possible. The talk will focus on complex Abelian varieties, so some familiarity with complex analysis would be helpful. Those currently in the Riemann surfaces course may find some interesting parallels.
