How I Write

Wine and refreshments will be served. Ann Marie Rasmussen, professor of Germanic languages and literature, joined the Duke faculty in 1988. She envisioned and implemented the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies, which was successfully launched August 2009. Her research treats medieval literature and culture from the twelfth century to the Reformation, and her publications combine gender studies with a variety of other approaches. These include manuscript studies, the anthropology of gift-giving, visuality studies, and, most recently, material culture. She is a prolific writer, having published four books, over thirty academic articles, and public writing in venues such as the Huffington Post. Currently, Rasmussen is completing an interdisciplinary study of medieval badges. She is also designing her next endeavor, a digital humanities geo-referencing project on the late medieval saints' cult known as The Holy Kinship. Recently awarded the Dean's Excellence in Mentoring Award, Rasmussen collaborates actively with graduate student scholars and helps them envision and develop their own scholarly writing lives. She also has served as a sustaining member of the Faculty Write Program, which advances conversations about faculty writing at Duke. Starting January 1, 2015, Rasmussen will be the Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker Memorial Chair of German Literary Studies at the University of Waterloo Canada. Please join us for a conversation about her writing life.
