Join us for a talk with visiting artist Philip Pearlstein on March 4 at 6:30 PM. It is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00 PM. Philip Pearlstein is an American painter best known for Modernist Realist nudes. Cited by critics as the preeminent figure painter of the 1960s to 2000s, he led a revival in realist art. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Pearlstein received his BFA in 1949 from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). In 1955 he was awarded an MA in Art History from Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. From 1959 to 1963, he was an instructor at Pratt Institute, and spent a year as a Visiting Critic at Yale University. He has served as Artist in Residence at the American Academy of Art, Rome; Resident Faculty at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME; Resident Faculty at Tanglewood, MA; and Visiting Artist at Navajo Community College, AZ. He has been the recipient of a Fulbright grant, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation grant, an American Academy and National Institute of Arts and Letters award, and a National Endowment for the Arts grant. From 1963 to 1988, he was Professor and Distinguished Professor, and is now Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Brooklyn College, NY. In 1988 he was elected into the National Academy of Design. From 2003-06 he served as President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His paintings are in over 70 art museum collections. He lives and works in New York City.
