Jazz Vespers Worship Service - Goodson Chapel

Event Image
Tuesday, November 10, 2015
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A collaboration between Duke Chapel and the Duke Jazz Program, this "Jazz Vespers" worship service combines the form of the traditional evening vespers service with the musical improvisation of jazz. Chapel Dean Luke Powery and others will offer prayers and readings during the service, while music professor John Brown's Big Band will provide musical leadership. Local ministers will also participate. Vespers is an ancient Christian service with chants, anthems, prayers and scripture reading. The John Brown Big Band is a professional large jazz ensemble, specializing in performances of traditional compositions from the Great American Songbook as well as contemporary arrangements. This service will merge the two traditions -- vespers and jazz -- for a contemporary expression of lament and celebration, highlighting the blues. Co-sponsored by the Duke Jazz Program. All are welcome to attend. To learn more, please visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDCJ0j_9oLE. Location: Goodson Chapel inside Duke Divinity School, just across the sidewalk from Duke Chapel.
