Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Reception

Event Image
Friday, October 30, 2015
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

In Mexico many people believe the souls of the dead return every year on October 31-November 1 for a twenty-four-hour visit. Returned loved ones are welcomed into their former homes with gaily decorated altars showing photos of the dead and provided offerings of food, flowers and gifts. Then they are escorted back to their resting places in the cemeteries. In recent years, Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) has become more widely practiced and known in the United States. Many communities in the United States participate in the preparation of altars. At the Duke Libraries we will be celebrating the third annual commemoration of this holiday on Friday, October 30th from 2-4 PM with a reception and two altars prepared in the exhibit space outside the International and Area Studies Department offices on the second floor of Bostock Library. If you would like to include a loved one's photo with a statement in the exhibit, contact bobbi.earp @ duke.edu or holly.ackerman @ duke.edu.
