BSA Real Talk

The Black Student Alliance invites everyone to our keynote event of the semester: Real Talk: On The Ground: A Conscious Citizen's Responsibility. This second Real Talk will feature the civil rights activist, DeRay McKesson as a central part of the conversation and activities.

DeRay Mckesson is known for his activism via social media outlets such as Twitter and Instagram and is a member of the organization We The Protesters, which organizes protests that center on the African-American community. In addition, he has been active in the Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland protests.

Aside from social media Mckesson has participated in discussions on CNN with Wolf Blitzer and has written for the Huffington Post. He, along with fellow activist Johnetta Elzie and WeTheProtestors.org, launched "Mapping Police Violence", which collected data on people killed by police during 2014. Mckesson and Elzie were awarded the Howard Zinn Freedom to Write Award in 2015 for their activism. They were also named to Fortune's "World's Greatest Leaders List" for their work with the Black Lives Matter Movement.

At this workshop, DeRay will be sharing his experiences, techniques, and wisdom around the topic of grassroots activism. We are excited to bring Deray McKesson to campus, and we hope that you will join us for this powerful event.

This event is sponsored by SOFC and Duke BSA.
