Data and Visualization Services Workshop Series

Regular Expressions are a powerful method of finding patterns in text. For example, find all words ending in "ing", all words which begin with a capital letter, all telephone area codes that begin with either the numbers 7 or 8, or all email addresses which contain "duke.edu". Many programming languages use regular expressions as a means to support pattern matching.

In this workshop we will continue using OpenRefine (from part 1) as the engine to learn regular expressions. At the end of part 1 it was noted that leveraging text mining capabilities in OpenRefine requires learning more about regular expressions. Part II will provide a more broad-based introduction to regular expressions as a means to help you leverage the text mining and transformation capabilities of OpenRefine.
