Duke University's Proposed CHP Plant: A Discussion Forum for Duke Students, Faculty and Staff

Duke University and Duke Energy have proposed to build a 21 MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) natural gas plant on Duke University's west campus. The plant will generate electricity for North Carolina's grid, as well as 85,000 pounds per hour of steam and hot water for Duke University and Duke Medical Center. The proposed plant will cost $55 million, occupy 1 acre of land, and be owned by Duke Energy. The proposed plant is expected to reduce Duke University's CO2 emissions by 18%, in addition to saving the university money off its annual natural gas bill.

Interested in the proposed plant, its expected benefits, and the decision making behind this proposal? Visit this website: http://sites.duke.edu/dukechpforum.

A discussion forum will be hosted on October 25 for Duke students, faculty and staff.

Members of Duke University's administration, facilities management, and faculty will answer questions and address concerns with the proposal.

Questions for the forum will be grouped into five key categories:

- How the plant fits into Duke University's Climate Action Plan
- The financial aspect of the proposed plant
- The handling of communication about the proposed plant
- Why natural gas, and how the university came to this proposal
- Environmental impact of the proposed plant

Please submit any questions or concerns you would like addressed at the forum to CHPfeedback@duke.edu.
