Carla Copeland-Burns, flute & Inara Zandmane, piano

Flutist Carla Copeland-Burns with guest artist Inara Zandmane present a snapshot of the last century of flute music through works by Philippe Gaubert, Béla Bartók, Otar Taktakishvili, Olivier Messiaen, Shulamit Ran, and Ian Clarke. Philippe Gaubert was a prominent member of the French Flute School with numerous awards as a composer, conductor, and soloist including positions at the Paris Conservatory and the Paris Opera. He was flute teacher to the famed Marcel Moyse and was most active between the two world wars. Gaubert's teaching legacy still shapes conservatory flute teaching worldwide. This program spanning the last one hundred years begins with music by Gaubert and concludes with music by current flutist-composer, Ian Clarke. Just as Gaubert shaped the 20th century flutist, Ian Clarke's compositions are contributing to new techniques and styles as the 21st century unfolds. Carla Copeland-Burns currently performs with the Greensboro and Salisbury Symphonies as well as the North Carolina Opera, Carolina Ballet, Blue Mountain, Mallarmé Chamber Players, and with the performer-composer collective Forecast Music. She teaches at Duke University and through her home studio and recently served on the faculty of the UNC-Greensboro after eight years as Instructor of flute at Radford University. Inara Zandmane has performed with such artists as Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Augustin Hadelich, Ray Chen, Ian Clarke, and Branford Marsalis. She is a staff accompanist at UNC-G.
