Ian Haney López
Sanford PhD Distinguished Lecture Series

*No tickets required!*

UC Berkeley professor Ian Haney López will offer a historical perspective on the successful use of coded racism, or political dog whistles, in the 2016 presidential campaign.

The talk, a Robert R. Wilson Distinguished Lecture called "Dog Whistle Politics: Race, Policy and Economic Inequality," will take place on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at Page Auditorium at Duke University. The event, which will include an audience Q & A, is free and open to the public and no tickets are required. Parking is available for a fee in the Bryan Center Parking Deck.

Political dog whistling is the use of coded, racially charged language to sway white voters by triggering fear and resentment toward minorities. Examples of political dog whistling include Ronald Reagan's use of the term "welfare queens" to Paul Ryan blaming poverty on a "culture problem" in "our inner cities."

Ian Haney López is the John H. Boalt Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches in the areas of race and constitutional law and is one of the nation's leading thinkers on racism's evolution in the United States since the civil rights era.
