Celebration of Preaching: Many Voices, One Gospel

Event Image
Thursday, March 30, 2017
12:30 pm - 7:30 pm

This day of events celebrates the Christian preaching tradition while acknowledging the creative tension in many voices seeking to proclaim one Gospel.

RSVP to receive updates and reserve seating at https://chapel.duke.edu/rsvp-celebration-preaching.

The featured preacher in the closing worship service will be the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and author of Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair and other works. Dr. Moss has built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism, preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.

Also in the closing worship service will be three choirs from Duke representing a range of musical traditions: the Duke Vespers Ensemble, the United in Praise student gospel choir, and the Divinity School Gospel Choir.

The day will also include a discussion of the rich preaching tradition at Duke Chapel with live readings from the Duke Chapel Recordings Archive. It will also feature a panel conversation on equipping new preachers, based the new book Ways of the Word: Learning to Preach for Your Time and Place by the Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery, dean of Duke University Chapel, and the Rev. Dr. Sally A. Brown, the Elizabeth M. Engle Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary.

More details to come.
