7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Emmy Award winning journalists John Donvan and Caren Zucker have devoted 17 years to reporting on autism for both ABC News and PBS, and published, in 2016, their bestselling account of the turbulent history of the condition - "In A Different Key: The Story of Autism." The book shares many fascinating nuggets uncovered in their research, showing how the narrative of autism - the struggles to live with and understand it - serves as a mirror on society as a whole, with some players proving more heroic than others. Their talk will center on an up-close portrait of the first child diagnosed: literally, autism's "Case 1," in the seminal 1943 article which first fully outlined the condition. Donvan and Zucker have spent much time with that individual, now an octogenarian, whose life outcome has been stunningly positive and encouraging - due in no small part to the extraordinary commitment to his well-being practiced every day by the Mississippi community where he has lived all his life. The event is free, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please register at: https://duke.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_eQ02bwnrXnWGdDL

The event is sponsored by the Duke Center for Autism and the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences.
