Psychiatry Grand Rounds: 2017 HONORED PROFESSOR LECTURE: "Inverted U-Shaped Curves: The Neuroscience and Art of Resident Education"

Dr. Elizabeth Sumner is the 2017 Honored Professor as chosen by residents and fellows in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. A 2016 graduate of the Duke Psychiatry Residency Training Program, Dr. Sumner earned her MD at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and her PhD in Neurobiology at Duke University. She has a special interest in improving the neurobiological understanding of psychotic disorders and their treatments. During her time in residency, she was a board member at Threshold Clubhouse, a rehabilitation, training, and job placement program for adults with severe mental illness. She also served for two years as Chief Resident at Central Regional Hospital (CRH) and co-founded a monthly translational neuroscience discussion group for psychiatry residents and neuroscience post-docs at Duke. Now an attending psychiatrist at CRH and an assistant consulting professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke, she has been supervising residents since August 2016. She co-leads the neuropsychiatry journal club series at CRH and enjoys frequent less formal academic discussions with residents regarding findings from neuroscience that are applicable to psychiatric practice.
