CDS Documentary Essay Prizewinner Rachel Andrews and photographer Dara McGrath

NOTE: There will be a reception at 6pm, prior to the 7pm presentation.The CDS Documentary Essay Prize honors the best in documentary photography and writing in alternating years. The winner of the inaugural 2013 prize competition, Irish writer Rachel Andrews, will give a public presentation with photographer Dara McGrath on documenting the demolition of Ireland's Maze Prison complex, the subject of Andrews' prizewinning essay, "A New Wilderness at the Maze."The maximum-security facility near Belfast is where paramilitary prisoners were incarcerated during the "Troubles" (1971¿2000) and where ten Republican hunger strikers died in 1981. Andrews will give a reading, with projected photographs, followed by a conversation. During a three-day visit to Duke--cosponsored with CDS by the university's Human Rights Center at the Franklin Humanities Institute and the Borderwork(s) Humanities Lab--Andrews and McGrath will meet with students in a variety of classes and interdisciplinary humanities programs to discuss their documentary process.
