DVS Workshop: Text Processing in Linux
This workshop will go over some of the standard command-line tools that are available in Unix/Linux/Mac environments for text processing, as well as methods to string those "simple" commands into more complex workflows and more powerful analyses. Examples will be shown for reformating tabular data, removing "bad" characters from files, detecting lines which contain certain words, counting words in files, and more. We will also cover some basic "screen-scraping" programs that can be used to interact with public websites. Note that the Cygwin package provides a similar, and compatible, processing environment for Windows OSes.
