Mark Hecker is the founder and executive director of Reach Incorporated, an innovative school reading program in Washington, D.C. The organization hires teens to be elementary-school reading tutors, creating academic benefit for both the students and their tutors. A psychology major while at Duke, Mark was also very involved in the Program in Education. He has gone on to earn two master¿s degrees, in social work at UNC-Chapel Hill and in education at Harvard University.DukeJourneys is a dinner series to help undergraduates synthesize their education with global and civic involvement. Through conversations with Duke alumni and one another, students can begin to examine their choices, understand their experiences and visualize their futures, not just as part of their college curricula, but as templates for their adult lives.Please join Mark Hecker for dinner and thoughtful conversation on his life at Duke and his journey to educate and empower young people. This event is open to undergraduates only, and space is limited. Registration required. A waitlist will be created if necessary.
