Dr. Matt Oliva '94 is an ophthalmologist and corneal surgeon, board member of the Himalayan Cataract Project and associate medical director of the SightLife eye bank for corneal transplants. He has traveled the world in an effort to eradicate treatable blindness, performing more than 10,000 cataract surgeries and training local doctors. An economics major at Duke, Matt went on to medical school and residency at the University of Washington and a fellowship in corneal diseases and surgery in Melbourne, Australia. His volunteer work was inspired by a med-school rotation in Nepal, and he directs the Himalayan Cataract Project¿s programs in Ethiopia. He was honored in June with the UW School of Medicine Alumni Humanitarian Award. DukeJourneys is a dinner series to help undergraduates synthesize their education with global and civic involvement. Through conversations with Duke alumni and one another, students can begin to examine their choices, understand their experiences and visualize their futures, not just as part of their college curricula, but as templates for their adult lives. Please join Matt Oliva for dinner and thoughtful conversation on his life at Duke and his journey to fight treatable blindness.
